Background Information

North Coast Wind Energy Corp. ("NCWEC") is a British Columbia company owned by Katabatic Power Corp. and Deutsche Bank AG, a leading global investment bank.

NCWEC has submitted a bid proposal, as part of the 2008 Clean Power Call, to BCHydro to construct and operate the Banks Island Wind Farm located on Banks Island, British Columbia. The proposed wind farm would generate 339 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable wind energy. As part of the proposal NCWEC has also provided BC Hydro with two options of increasing the wind farm capacity based on their demand forecasts. The maximum capacity of these two options is 700 MW.

Project Details

Banks Island is an uninhabited island approximately 75km long and 25km wide on BC's North Coast. The island is located approximately 90 km south of Prince Rupert. The proposed wind farm is situated predominantly on Crown land as well as a portion of the Banks Nii Luutiksm Conservancy in the northwest region of Banks Island. Only about 1% of the 10000 hectare wind farm area will be used by the major components of the wind farm.

The Banks Island Wind Farm will include the following components:

  • 103 to 234 (3MW or greater) wind turbine generators
  • A substantial bulkhead or port facility
  • Access roads on the island
  • Substation
  • Approximately 100 km of AC transmission line that will interconnect to an existing British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC) transmission line (BCTC 2L101) on the south side of the Skeena River or 180km of high voltage direct current (HVDC) that will interconnect to the BCTC grid at the Skeena Substation near Terrace, BC

First Nations

NCWEC has been working with the Gitxaala First Nation, Lax Kw'alaams First Nation and Metlakatla First Nation since 2006 to share information about the project and build a commercial relationship with respect to the project.

Environmental Impact

NCWEC is currently preparing our Environmental Assessment Application for submission to the BC Environmental Assessment Office for fall 2009.

NCWEC is committed to a comprehensive consultation program that will build strong relationships with community partners and ensure that all stakeholders are informed of project developments in a timely manner.
